"The Good Life Starts Here"
Welcome to a place that has adopted the above phrase as our very own Bill of Rights. This means that all of our decisions regarding the welfare of our community are based upon quality of life considerations. We continually ask ourselves how our actions will preserve our history and protect the unrivaled natural beauty of our region. As always, the answer lies in quality of life issues.
One of the first things you should know about Stamford is our setting…Mother Nature has been good to us. Our landscape consists of impressive mountains that cascade into a checkerboard of forests and farmlands. The scenery produces a different view with each turn in the road. It's no wonder that some adventurous people from Stamford, Connecticut stumbled upon this setting in the 18th Century and decided to call the place Stamford New York, telling the world that this place was worthy of a name they once called home. Not surprisingly, their discovery was a hard secret to keep. City dwellers gradually became aware of this precious mountain enclave, and the railroads cooperated in bringing access to Stamford where grand hotels sprouted up along with spas and recreational facilities. In the early 1900's this resulted in Stamford earning a reputation as the "Queen of the Catskills". The underlying assets that have attracted people to Stamford over the years remain intact.
That takes us to the present day. You will see a town with a history that you can almost reach out and touch, with a good many classic buildings still standing as evidence of a grand era of enterprise and tourism. You can play golf on one of the best 18 hole courses in the Catskills, take walks on miles of groomed trails or browse through the unique bookstores in our sister village, Hobart, which is known as the "Book Village". You will see restoration activity which shows that people are investing time and money in their belief in our future. We are an interesting and diverse group of concerned citizens, including people who were born here, visitors who decided to stay, house fixer-uppers, seasonal folks, retirees and others who defy description. The common denominator is a mutual love of our community.
All of this adds up to a place where . . . the good life starts.
